International Technology Forum
the Power of Technology - Ensuring the Global Future of Coal

Dear Colleague:

As you know, coal is the dominant fuel source for the production of electricity around the world.  Both developed and developing economies will rely upon this abundant resource to power their economies for many decades into the future.  For coal to remain a primary source of energy in a carbon constrained world, technology is the key.

We invite you to join world renowned experts as they identify and discuss the country, regional and global challenges to developing and deploying new coal-based technologies to cost-effectively address coal’s environmental concerns, including the emissions of carbon dioxide.  In a unique roundtable format, forum attendees and coal technology experts will identify the common challenges and solutions to the development and use of clean coal technologies.

Industry representatives and government officials from the world’s major coal using regions have been invited to participate.  Representatives from the European Commission on Energy, RWE Energy of Germany, GreenGen in China, JPower in Japan, SaskPower in Canada, Eskom of South Africa, and the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) are among those invited to participate.  Also, the CEO from the FutureGen Industrial Alliance will discuss the activities underway here in the U.S.

The attached brochure identifies the key issues that will be addressed during this two day forum.  Paula Dobriansky, the Under Secretary for Global Affairs, is confirmed for a luncheon address following an Asia Pacific Partnership panel discussion on February 6.  Jeff Sterba, the CEO of PNM, the Chairman of EPRI, and the 2007 Chair of EEI, has confirmed his participation as has David Ratcliffe, CEO of Southern Company, one of the largest coal based utilities in the U.S.  Participants also include Nicholas Akins, Executive Vice President of American Electric Power and co-Chair of CURCSM whose company is building one of the first commercial-scale IGCC systems in the U.S.  And Brian Ricketts, the lead coal analyst for the International Energy Agency, will be discussing the importance of coal technologies in the IEA World Energy Outlook 2006.

As the leading advocates for the continued use of coal in this country, our organizations are actively supporting this event and encourage you to participate.  For more information, please call the Coal Utilization Research Council at (202)298-1850 or send an email to curc@vnf.com.
