Coal RD&D Funding in FY 2012 Omnibus Appropriations Bill

Monday, December 19, 2011

On December 14th, House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-KY) introduced an omnibus spending package that reflects a negotiation on FY 2012 federal spending between the House and Senate.  This bill contains FY 2012 funding for federal agencies under nine Appropriations bills including Energy and Water as well as: Financial Services, Defense, Homeland Security, Interior/Environment,  Labor/Health and Human Services/Education, the Legislative Branch, Military Construction/Veterans Affairs, and State/Foreign Operations.

The legislation provides $534 million to the Department of Energy's Fossil Energy (FE) program for research and development to advance coal, natural gas, and other fossil energy power generation technologies. This recommendation is $81 million above the President's request, $88.5 million above the Senate's request, and $57 million above the original House request.

Within the Fossil Energy budget, the coal RD&D program was allocated $368.6 million dollars, which is $77 million above the President’s request

For a full report on funding provided to coal RD&D in the FY 2012 Omnibus Appropriations bill, see the members-only side of the CURC website.
